I Went On Leave For 4 Days. This Is What I Discovered

After many weeks of being mentally, physically and emotionally fatigued, I decided to fill in leave days to distress and cater to my personal issues.

I had been dying to have some alone time and be in a position to watch a movie and calm my back. My back has been on fire for the last two months such that I am constantly in pain and constantly fatigued. All these can be attributed to commuting, sitting for long hours and lack of exercise.

Being Employed Is Great

Being self-employed or a digital nomad or an influencer or quitting your job to become a freelancer has been so glorified that it makes being employed look bad.

For the days that I was on leave, it really dawned on me how much being employed is great and that you actually need a plan before you can branch out. Yes, you have a blog but how much does it bring in? Is your side project viable to maintain your lifestyle?

Employment comes with great benefits such as stability, insurance, savings, human interaction, learning new skills, travel opportunities and many other benefits that you are enjoying right now.

Yes. I want to be self-employed sometime in the future. But I also want to learn new skills and meet new people.

You Need A Plan Before You Quit Your Job And Seek Self Employment.

Before I took leave, I had mapped out how I would spend each of my leave days. However, I had nothing planned for the last day because there was nothing more to do.

I spent the first 5 hours reading, writing and working on my site and the rest eating, watching Netflix and contemplating this topic. I decided to WhatsApp my sister and we both agreed that even though you have a side project that brings in a tonne of money, you still need something to keep you active for at least 6 hours a day.

Here’s what I figured you can do if you have such a side project:

  • Go to the gym
  • Be a consultant in your field.
  • Write your novel or ebook.
  • Create an online course.
  • Community work. Find a place to Volunteer.

Of course, consulting, volunteering and going to the gym are great because you can do them every day for the rest of your life.

Bottom line is; you need to go outside, see people, exercise and be social. Human beings are social beings.

Your Self Employment Plan Must Have Been Tested Before And Found To Be Working

While the internet today loves talking about taking risks and making big moves, I am more in favour of peace of mind, taking small calculated moves and having stability unless you are mentally and emotionally stable to cope with the pressure that comes with big risks.

  • How much does your side project make and how scalable is it?
  • Would you like to employ people?
  • Who can you collaborate with to make it bigger?
  • Do you like managing people?
  • Do you have short term and long term clients?

Being Employed Is Actually Okay

And I don’t mean Okay in terms of settling. I mean okay because we need doctors, lawyers, janitors, bus drivers etc. We need everyone to keep the ecosystem working and improving. I live in Nairobi and once in a while, bus drivers will strike due to one reason or another. The transport system suffers paralysis and everyone is stranded. What’s worse is that everyone drives to work as opposed to using public transport which in turn causes massive traffic.

In this regard, someone needs to do jobs that offer help and sustenance to the people and the economy without feeling guilty. Which is what the internet might do to you if you are not self-aware and self-conscious. Your work matters.

Take A Break

Sometimes I really feel guilty if I am not working. I should be, I should be, I should have… it’s a lot of pressure. I feel guilty enjoying myself, watching movies and going out at times.

It’s great to take a break sometimes. Listen to music while chilling or doing laundry or washing your whole apartment clean.

Take a break.

Your body will thank you and when you come back you will be able to take more tasks and be more efficient and productive.
