Kenyan Passport

Today I am excited to have Monicah guest post on ‘How To Renew a Kenyan Passport – Filled, Lost or Mutilated.’ Monicah is one of my blogger friends from Nairobi and has interviewed me before on her blog. To read more about that article, click here.

I am also guest posting on her site so head over there and read this article I wrote about

Countries have borders, actually, borders are what make countries. To access certain countries within your border requires simply a national identification card, others require a passport while others require a passport and a visa. Yellow fever card applies to all countries for your health safety. And safe to say, you only need to get one yellow fever injection for a cost of around Kshs. 2,000 – 4,000. A yellow fever certificate is a yellow booklet. The yellow fever certificate lasts a lifetime.

First time Kenyan passport is valid for 10 years.

So, how does one renew their passport once it has expired? Or when it gets lost or spoilt? How does one obtain another? And are there charges? Well, I’m here to answer that. The interesting and frustrating thing is you have to undergo the same long old boring process you went through when you first applied for a Kenyan passport.

Currently, in Kenya, old generation passports are being replaced with a new generation which is a light blue booklet compared to the old dark blue booklet. Everyone who has an old one is required by the government to have handed it in by the 31st of August 2019. They are required to chuck from Kshs. 4,550 depending on the number of pages of the booklet.

A Reminder of How to Obtain a Kenyan Passport:

Visit the online passport application website
Go to immigration.ecitizen.go.ke
Click on the passport application form
Fill in the form carefully
Select payment mode and pay
Print out the form and three receipts
That’s the end of the online passport application process
Other requirements to have for application

  • Your original birth certificate and a copy
  • Your original national identification card (ID) and a copy
  • Parent’s national ID copies or death certificate copies
  • Three current passport photos
  • Your recommender’s ID copy (recommender is anyone who has a passport and is not your close relative –
  • recommender details are filled while applying for the passport online)
  • Consent letter for minors
  • Old passport for replacement.

The charges are as follows:

PASSPORT TYPE Fee (Kshs)
32 Pages Ordinary “A” Series Kshs. 4,550
48 pages Ordinary “B” Series Kshs. 6,050
64 Pages Ordinary “C” Series Kshs. 7,550
East African Passport Kshs. 990
Diplomatic passport (48 pages) Kshs 7,550
Mutilated Passport Kshs 10,050
Lost Passport Kshs 12,050

Unfortunately, you have to pay the same amount to replace an old or filled passport as you paid while applying for a new one. A mutilated one which means damaged even by water will cost you Kshs. 10,050. A lost one meaning you don’t have your old passport for replacement with a new one will cost you Kshs. 12,050.

Once ready with all the paperwork, visit the immigration office at Nyayo House Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa. Here you will find a long queue which is typical Kenya really. Then once done with the tiring process of visiting several different offices, you will have to wait for a much longer period to get your passport as compared to the stated waiting period(10 working days – oh how I wish) on the immigration website.
